Transportation
Service to the Hammond Hotel Before the Start
of the Event
We are pleased to offer transportation
service to the Hammond hotel from both Kenosha
and downtown Chicago for you, your bicycle, and
your baggage the day before the
start of the event.

Here for more information
about our Transportation Service to Hammond
Before the Start of the Event.

Driving
to the Start of the Event
Many participants either drive to the Whiting, IN starting location and park
their
car
there
for
the
day
or get dropped off there by friends or family.

Here for more information about
our starting location in Whiting, IN.
Riding
to the Start of the Event
If you do not have a car or another way to get
to the start of the event and you don't want to start
your ride from Chicago, you can still arrive there
by
riding
your
bike.
The Morning of the Event
You can ride to the starting location either
from the Hammond
Hotel or the 95th/Dan Ryan St. CTA L Train
Station the morning
of the
event.
If you encounter a problem that requires SAG vehicle
support while riding to the starting location we will
not be able to come to your location and assist you
until after the group departure from Whiting around
7:15 am.
- Click
Here for more information about
riding to the Whiting, IN starting location
the morning of the event.
Day Before the Event
You can also ride to the Hammond
Hotel from the 95th/Dan
Ryan
St. CTA L Train Station or rest stop 1 in downtown
Chicago the day before the event.
- Click
Here for more information about riding
to the Hammond hotel the day before the event.
Personal Baggage Transportation
If you will be riding to the starting
location and you want to bring a personal bag with
you, you will need to carry it with you
yourself on your bike. We recommend
using panniers or a small backpack since it may
not be easy to carry another type of bag such as
a duffel
bag while riding on your bike.
- Click
Here for more information about
bringing a personal bag with you.
Navigation
If you will be riding to the starting location you
will need to download and print the appropriate
cue sheets and
maps (and GPS route dataset files if applicable)
yourself since we will not be able to distribute
printed copies of them to you before the event. You
will also need to use them exclusively for navigation
since the routes to the starting location will not
be marked with painted signage on the road.
Starting from Chicago
If you do not want to ride to the starting location
in Whiting you can also start your ride directly
from
Rest Stop
1 in Chicago.
- Click
Here for more information about
starting from Chicago.
Other
Transportation Means to the Start of the Event
Even though there are several other transportation options for you to travel
from Chicago to the start of the event, none fit within the logistics of the
event
as
well as driving or riding there yourself.
Riding
from Rest Stop 1 to the Starting Location the Day
of the Event
We cannot support riding from rest stop 1 to the starting location the morning
of the event because the distance is too far. In order to ride during daylight
and arrive at the starting location by the check in deadline time of 7:00 am
all riders would need
to average about 19 mph, which very few riders could do.
Riding
to Whiting After the End of the Event
We cannot support riding to Whiting after the end of the event because it will
be dark when we arrive back in downtown Chicago as part
of our return transportation service from Kenosha. As a result if you rode
back to Whiting it would definitely be dark by the time you arrived there,
which we cannot support.
- Click
Here for more information about
riding at night.
Metra
Electric District Trains
Only 8 bikes are allowed per train and if we planned on participants arriving
at the starting location from Chicago by taking the Metra Electric District
train, there would be a significant risk that many participants would not be
able
to transport
their bicycle on the train.
- Click
Here for more information about
Metra trains including important information
about bicycle limits aboard each train.
In addition, the closest Metra Electric District
train station to the starting location is the 93rd
St. (South Chicago) station, which is still a 5.5
mile ride to the starting location. On Saturdays
the earliest train arrives at 7:05 am, and you would
not be able to ride to the starting location by the
group departure time. On Sundays the earliest train
arrives before sunrise at 5:37 am so you would not
be able to avoid riding in the dark, and the next
train arrives there at 7:37 am - after our group
departure time.
Amtrak
Trains
Even though the Hammond Amtrak train station is only 1.4 miles from our starting
location, fully assembled bikes are not allowed on the train. The
train also
arrives in Hammond at 7:29 am, after our group departure time.
South
Shore Line Trains
Fully assembled bicycles are not allowed on the train. In addition, the earliest
train from Chicago arrives at the Hammond station (the closest one to our starting
location) at 9:24 am - after our group
departure time.
Charter
Bus from Downtown Chicago to Whiting
Unfortunately we will not be able to run a charter bus from Chicago to Whiting
the morning of the event because we simply won't have enough time to load and
unload
bikes for people to be ready to depart by the group departure
time.
