Individual GPS Units
Vs. Painting and Flagging
We will either paint Dan Henry markings and put up orange flags
over the entire route or rely on every participant to ride with their
own individual GPS unit.
When we rely on every participant to ride with their own individual
GPS unit, we will provide one to every participant who will not already
be riding with one of their own.

We strongly prefer to rely on individual GPS units for navigation instead
of painting due to the significant benefits GPS units have over traditional
navigation means in addition to the recurring cost savings and significantly
decreased amount of work involved using individual GPS units. We are willing
to invest in more GPS units if necessary because we can reuse them over and
over again for all of our events versus only being able to use the painting
marks and flags one time for each event. We may also rent GPS units from
another company to supplement the number of GPS units we already own.
However, we will plan on painting and flagging the route until we decide
it will be better to rely on individual GPS units for each event. Generally,
we will make that decision immediately after the regular registration closes
so we know how exactly many total participants we will have for each event
and how many of those participants will already be riding with their own
GPS unit.
Whether we rely on individual GPS units or paint marks and orange flags
depends on such factors as the total number of participants for each event,
the number of participants who will already be using their own GPS unit,
the duration of the event (one or multiple days), how far away the event
is from Chicago (due to our own travel expenses), and also how many GPS units
we have available to distribute. The fewer number of participants, the longer
the duration of the event, and the more participants who already have their
own GPS, the more likely we are to rely on individual GPS units. However,
we will still generally paint the route for local, one day events with higher
participation levels due to the logistic and time constraints of distributing
and collecting GPS units and handlebar mounts and conducting GPS training
for these events.
