Illini Weekend Getaway Specific Updates for the 2022 Season

2/26/22

  • Our supported hotel for this year (and this year only) will be the Econolodge in Urbana. Click Here for more information.
    • Depending on participation levels, we may need to conduct part or all of the main check and opening meeting at 8:00 am Saturday morning at the central rest stop location. This is because the meeting space at our supported hotel is very limited may not be sufficient. We will let all participants know our plans for the main check and opening meeting on Saturday May 7th, 2022, the day after our regular registration closes.
    • If you take our transportation service from Chicago to Champaign before the start of the event, unfortunately the hotel is 2.2 miles from the train and bus station and you will not be able to easily walk there yourself.
      • If you arrive in Champaign on the 393 Illini Amtrak train that departs Chicago at 4:05 pm (which the vast majority of participants do) we will meet you at the train station and give you a ride to the supported hotel ourselves.
      • Otherwise if you arrive in Champaign on another public transportation schedule you will need to get over to the supported hotel on your own. Directions and a map will be provided. Or if you don't want to walk, a cab ride there will be relatively quick and inexpensive, especially if you want to split the ride with your fellow participants.
    • We plan on returning to the Hyatt Place in downtown Champaign as our supported hotel in future years.

12/4/21

  • Registration is now open for the 2022 Illini Weekend Getaway! Click Here to register!

12/3/21

  • If you sign up for the Mechanical Support Plan, you will need to specifically request the pre-ride inspection yourself as we will not be able to search out each participant individually to provide it.
  • Due to increasing prices for gas and food, the regular registration price of the full weekend event has increased by $5.00 if you register between Jan. 1st and 31st, and by $10.00 if you register between Feb. 1st and May 6th. The prices for late registration for the full weekend have also increased accordingly. However the regular registration price for the full weekend will remain the same as last year if you register before Dec. 31st. The prices of all other services and merchandise, including one day registration and all transportation services, will remain the same as last year. Click Here for more information about our pricing schedule.
  • Unfortunately, we can only allow postponed 2020 participants to register for an event at the original 2020 pricing schedule one time. Click Here for more information.

11/29/21

  • Unfortunately our previous supported hotel, the Hyatt Place in downtown Champaign, will be unavailable due to the NCAA tennis finals at the University of Illinois the same weekend as the event. We plan on returning to the Hyatt Place as our supported hotel in future years.

11/8/21

  • Web site updated with 2022 dates.
    • The Illini Weekend Getaway will occur on May 20th - 22nd, 2022.

Major Previous Illini Weekend Getaway Specific Updates

  • Registration procedures for postponed 2020 participants posted. Click Here for more information.
  • The late fee has increased from $20.00 to $25.00 per day.
  • No refunds will be issued in the event we are unable to run an event due to circumstances beyond our control. These circumstances include but are not limited to disasters (natural and/or manmade), pandemics, war, acts of terrorism, government regulations, strikes, civil disorder, curtailment of transportation facilities, or acts of God. (Force Majure)
  • If you want to pay directly at the Chicago parking garage, the kiosk there now automatically calculates and charges you the total amount owed after you leave based on the ticket you received when you entered. It no longer only issues tickets for the current day one at a time. You no longer need to purchase enough single day tickets that total to the correct amount due for the total amount of time you will leave your car parked there in advance or leave all the tickets clearly displayed on your dashboard so the garage staff knows you have paid. Click Here for more information.
  • There will be an additional $25.00 fee to transport recumbents and tandems on any transportation service. However a tandem bicycle will not incur an additional fee if both people riding it register for the same transportation service.
  • Only online registration will be available four weeks before the start of the event in order to assure that we receive all of your information and payment in a timely manner due to laspes in mail service. This includes all late registrations. Click Here for more information.
  • The south loop now features a stop at the Sidney Dairy Barn in the middle of the route. Stop in and and enjoy the world's best ice cream! Click Here for more information.
  • A cue sheet and map for the walking route from the Amtrak train station to the supported hotel has been posted. Click Here for more information.
  • We will now set up at the transportation staging point in Chicago beginning at 7:30 am on Friday (previously 7:00 am) to accept bicycles and baggage to transport to Champaign.
  • Our main opening meeting will be held at 7:30 pm in the Bailey Room in the Champaign hotel. Click Here for more information.
  • WE NO LONGER ISSUE ANY REFUNDS AT ANY TIME FOR ANY REASON. If you do not participate and would like a refund you MUST purchase an individual travel insurance plan, which will reimburse you according to the plan coverage.Click Here for more information about our refund policy.
  • Unfortunately the Live Grit Triathlon Store is no longer in business and we have renamed the event to the "Illini" Weekend Getaway.
  • The Champaign hotel and and transportation staging point before the start of the event has changed to the Hyatt Place. The new hotel is located in the heart of downtown Champaign and is only a 0.3 miles walk from the Amtrak train and Greyhound Bus station for our participants taking our transportation service from Chicago to Champaign before the start of the event. Click Here for more information.
  • We now allow trikes (any bicycle with three or more wheels) to participate in our events. However, all participants riding trikes must provide their own on road support for them at all times because we cannot guarantee that we will be able to easily or quickly transport them off the road in any support vehicle in case of mechanical breakdown. In addition, we still cannot accomodate any trikes on any of our transportation services. Click Here for more information.
