Times
Days
Generally we will provide transportation services both before the
start and after the end of our events and these specific transportation services
will happen at the same time. For example we will not usually have one transportation
service occur immediately after the end of an event and another transportation
service occur the next day. We will also not provide any transportation services
other than our prearranged ones before the start and/or after the end of
our events.
Day Before
the Start of the Event
When the transportation service occurs on the day before
the start of the event and lodging in the starting town is not
included in registration, you will need to secure lodging there.
We will always have a supported hotel available in this case.
Morning
of a Riding Day
We currently do not offer transportation service the morning of a riding day
because there are so many other things going on at the same time and our events
generally begin at or very soon after sunrise.
Immediately
After the End of the Event
When we offer transportation service from immediately after
the end of an event, it will
generally depart directly from the ending location at or shortly after the
official route closing time. We may depart earlier if possible but because
of our strict no man left behind policy we will not depart until all participants
have arrived safely at the ending location. Day After the End of the Event
After the end of the event everyone, participants and staff alike, will be very,
very tired.
When
we
feel it would be unsafe for the majority of people to drive immediately after
the
end
of the event the transportation service after the end of the event will
occur the next day.
All vehicle loading will occur the next day and you will still need to wear
your wristband to be identified as an official participant.
Departure Times
In general, we plan on our transportation service departing as early
in the day as possible. The specific logistics of our transportation services,
particularly the schedule and method of people transportation, depends on a
multitude of factors including:
- A reasonable time of arrival at the arrival town, preferably well before
sunset
- The number of participants taking a particular transportation service
- Whether we are transporting people, and/or bicycles, baggage
- Existing vehicles we will already be using as part of the event
- The distance and duration of travel to, between, and from starting, stopping,
and ending towns
- The logistics of specific transportation staging points (hours of operation,
etc.) and other supporting services and facilities (bike shops, etc.)
- Local and long distance public transportation carriers and schedule available
in each town
- Day of the week (transportation services on weekdays need to be more
flexible in order to better accommodateindividual work schedules)
- The itinerary in the arrival town
- Available local or long distance public transportation carriers including
their:
- Ability to transport bicycles
- Specific schedule departure and arrival times
- Fares
- Proximity of the transportation staging point to the bus and/or
train station(s) in each stopping town
- Parking conflicts from other major events such as festivals, celebrations,
concerts
- Having your bicycle and/or baggage available at the arrival town before
participants arrive so they won't have to wait for them
- Any speed difference between our support vehicles and the vehicles passengers
will travel aboard, (such as a box truck transporting bicycle vs. an Amtrak
train transporting people)
- Arriving at any mid-route pick up and/or drop off locations before the
vehicles participants will travel aboard as necessary.
