Following the Route
While we can and will provide you many redundant
navigational systems to make sure you're going in
the right direction, there is one fatal flaw in every
single one of our navigational systems that we cannot
get rid of - YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION!
From our experience, 99% of the times when participants
have gotten lost it was because they were simply
not paying attention to the route and "fell
asleep at the wheel." The route is not like
a journey on one single interstate highway
where you can pretty much zone out and not really
pay attention. Instead there are literally hundreds
of individual cues, turns, and tricky spots – all
places where you could easily get lost. It is up
to you and you alone to properly follow the route,
it is impossible for us to do it for you.
The best analogy to make here is for you to imagine
that you were driving a car on the route instead
of riding a bike and you knew that there would be
hundreds of turns coming up. You would probably be
constantly checking the maps, the cue sheets, the
road signs, etc., and might get a little upset if
someone was talking to you while you’re trying
to pay attention and figure out the directions and
follow the route. That’s the best mentality
to take when you’re riding as well – to
PAY ATTENTION SO YOU DON’T GET LOST!
If you’re not sure about something take things
slow! It can be very easy to miss a turn and very
hard to pick up the route again once you’re
lost. The few extra minutes that you lose by going
more slowly while looking for the turn will easily
be wiped out trying to find the route again. Use
all of the navigational systems available to you a lot!
