Baggage Types

Your baggage will be moved around a lot and most likely will be packed very tightly with other bags on our vehicles.

In all cases the best type of bags to use are the waterproof expedition style ones because they are so rugged and waterproof in case it rains. If this is not possible, your bags should be very durable and rugged so they don't break, rip, or fall apart easily, and be able to stay closed completely so your personal items can’t spill out. They should also be as water resistant as possible.

If you will be carrying at lot of gear on multi-day events, we recommend having one very large main bag to carry almost all of your gear such as your tent, sleeping bag, clothes, etc. If you plan on camping outdoors, we also recommend using waterproof or at least water resistant stuff sacks to store your tent to prevent dew and moisture from getting other things in your bag wet or damp.

On all events we recommend using a small, easily accessible day pack or duffel bag to carry the supplies you will need immediately before and/or the ride, such as suntan lotion, your shower items, a change of clothes, and any necessary medication.

Quick Baggage Story: One year a participant used a cardboard box and their box fell apart from being moved around so much. Their stuff ended up all over the baggage truck and they had to through the hassle of finding and buying a new bag in town after an already long day of cycling. Do not store your luggage in anything cardboard. We guarantee it will fall apart!

Shipping Containers
If you plan on using a hard, reusable shipping container to ship your bike to or from the end of the event, we would appreciate it if you could make arrangements to leave it somewhere to pick up after the end of the event if possible, such as at our supported hotel, at the supporting bike shop, or with friends and family.

If this is not possible we will transport your shipping container for you although we would prefer not to because they are so big and bulky. If we have to transport it, your shipping container will be count as one of your two allowable pieces of baggage and we recommend planning on using it as your main baggage item and keeping your personal items in it to use your baggage space most efficiently.

If you plan on using a cardboard box as your shipping container, we will not transport it for you between stopping towns because the cardboard will fall apart and most bike shops include a cardboard box as part of their charge to disassemble, box, and ship your bike.

Bike Trailers
If you have a bike trailer we will transport it for you but you must let us know about it ahead of time. It will count as one of your pieces of baggage.
