Distances

Total Ride
The nominal length of the ride is 500 miles, or 85 miles per day on average. If you do every century option the nominal length of the ride is 600 miles, or 100 miles per day. The actual specific ride lengths will vary based on the options you choose and is considerably more than the most direct interstate route between Cairo and downtown Chicago at about 375 miles.

The minimum length of the entire ride is 507.3 miles, or 84.6 miles per day on average if you don’t do any options that add on additional mileage.

Please note that when originally planning the event in 2004 we had to estimate what the mileage would be and unfortunately we underestimated it by about 80 miles, so some extremely outdated promotional information may still say the route is 420 miles long. As time goes on hopefully everyone will update their information.

Main Lodging Site
If you stay at the main lodging site every night the shortest possible route is 507.3 miles total if you don’t do any options and the longest possible route is 610.0 miles total if you do every possible option.

Supported Hotels
If you stay at the supported hotel every night the shortest possible route is 511.9 miles total if you don’t do any options and the longest possible route is 616.2 miles total if you do every possible option.

If you stay at the supported hotel every night, the entire ride is only about 5 miles longer.

On average, the supported hotels are only 1.7 miles from the main lodging site, with the closest one being 0.3 miles away in Centralia and the farthest one only being 3.1 miles away in Effingham.

However, in every stopping town except Cairo you will also save 0.9 miles on the first ride of the day because the supported hotel is located on the way out of town and you will bike directly onto the main route from the supported hotel.

Non-Century Days
Each day is 85.0 miles long on average. Here are the average daily mileages for each non-century day:

Century Days
Each day is 102.0 miles long on average. Here are the average daily mileages for each century day:

Ride Segments
The average ride segment is 18.7 miles, not including any optional rides such as rides to or from supported hotels or any additonal mileage due to options. The longest mandatory ride segment will be 23.9 miles from Matteson to Wm. Powers Conservation Area (Wolf Lake). The shortest mandatory ride segment will be 8.5 miles on the loop ride from the Cairo main lodging site to the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. The longest ride segment for a century option will be 26.1 miles for the Centralia century loop option.
